The founder of Andriana Furs, Sohrab Tebyanian has operated the iconic Chicago institution since 1987. In addition to offering a wide range of outerwear made from fur, shearling, suede, and handmade Italian leather, Sohrab Tebyanian provides fur storage services to help customers maintain their fur and leather items.
When stored properly, a fur can maintain its beauty and quality for a lifetime. Appropriate storage requires attention to numerous environmental factors, including temperature. Because high heat can damage a fur, storage facilities should be kept at around 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Substantial fluctuations in temperature can also cause the breakdown of the fur’s natural materials. Cold temperatures prevent the evaporation of natural oils in both fur and leather linings, keeping them soft and supple. High humidity contributes to rotting, while low humidity causes leather and fur to dry out and become brittle. Optimal humidity in a fur storage facility is between 45 and 55 percent. Finally, furs require ample space to facilitate air circulation and should be rotated regularly to prevent certain areas from becoming crushed or flattened.
