Growing an organic vegetable garden that's capable of yielding a sizable harvest requires both patience and knowledge of your chosen plants’ needs. Before choosing the crops you want to grow, prepare your plot with the optimal mix of nutrients, and purchase supplies that will foster their growth without using pesticides. Ensure that your hose is long enough to water your whole chosen plot. If necessary, enrich the soil with either homemade or store-bought compost to increase your plants’ yield. To inhibit the growth of weeds, spread a one- to two-inch layer of mulch on top of the soil. When purchasing plants, pick the healthiest ones you can find: bushy specimens without an excess of roots. Do not pick the tallest plants you find, because this indicates that they did not receive enough light when grown initially. Avoid seedlings that already have flowers, but if you must purchase flowering seedlings, pinch off the flowers or buds; doing so will allow the plant to allot resources toward growing strong roots instead. Alternatively, if you purchase seeds, follow the instructions on the seed packet, because they will tell you how far apart to space the seeds to prevent fungal growth and crowding.
