Strength training is a way to increase lean muscle mass and reduce body mass while gaining health benefits such as stronger bones and chronic condition management. One way to perform strength training is to use large elastic bands called resistance bands, which can come in varying levels of resistance or stretchiness and are typically about a yard long when not stretched. A common resistance band exercise is the lateral raise, where the individual stands with both feet on the middle of the resistance band. Then, while holding each end of the resistance band with their hands, the person raises both arms to the side up to shoulder height, returns to the initial position, and repeats the movement ten times. Another exercise that can be performed while stepping on the middle of the resistance band is the bicep curl. In this case, the individual holds each end of the band with their hands and raises their forearms, bending their elbow, until reaching chest height. After that, they return to the initial position and repeat the movement ten times.
